PRESS RELEASE: Anna Bogatin Ott - The Nature of Things opens February 15

February 6, 2020 - Holly Johnson Gallery

Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas is pleased to announce the opening of The Nature of Things an exhibition of recent paintings by Anna Bogatin Ott of Philadelphia. An opening reception will be held Saturday, February 15, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The exhibition continues through April 25.

In Anna Bogatin Ott’s third solo show at the gallery, paintings executed over the last several years attest to her unyielding, exercise in mark making. The works are minimal and abstract indicating a type of tantric and meditative rhythm drawn from her deep interest in Buddhism. The reductive aspect may remind some viewers of Agnes Martin, or other Abstract Expressionists with whom she also shares their interest in the spiritual in art, but here strong color and tension generated by the pull between the horizontal and vertical forces distinguishes Bogatin Ott from her forebears.

For Arts+Culture Texas, John Zotos writes, “…the consistency of Bogatin Ott’s work never wavers. Her aesthetic vision signifies the importance, now more than ever, of the possibilities of paint and the place where duration, sustained contemplation, and perception itself, meld within the realm of art.”

The exhibit is inspired by the Roman poem “On the Nature of Things” by Titus Carus Lucretious that preserved Epicurean Philosophy of nature, science, anthropology and philosophy. The exhibit reflects the artists own contemplation on the human relationship with nature. Her belief in balance between natural instincts and intellectual aspirations manifests directly within her art process and the art form that she creates.

Bogatin Ott was born in the former Soviet Union, Ukraine (1970). She lived in Russia, the Republic of Georgia, Ukraine and Poland prior to coming to the U.S (1992). She received her BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia (2002), and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2006). Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad and is included in important collections, including Georgia Museum of Art, Athens, GA, Gregory Allicar Museum of Art, Fort Collins, CO, Jones Day Law Firm, Dallas, TX, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Philadelphia, PA, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, University of Illinois, Champaign, IL, UT Southwestern Medical System, Dallas, TX, and numerous private collections.
