PRESS RELEASE: Raphaëlle Goethals - Echoes
January 9, 2016 - Holly Johnson Gallery
Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas is pleased to announce the opening of ECHOES an exhibition of new encaustic paintings by Raphaëlle Goethals. An opening reception will be held for the artist on Saturday, January 9th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibition continues through March 26.
The paintings featured in ECHOES reveal themselves slowly, examining the relationship between space and depth, presence and absence. Raphaëlle Goethals has used wax, resin and earth pigments as her signature medium for nearly twenty years. Through repetition of process and the sheer physical effort of applying countless layers in her work, she aims for a deep level of emotional resonance which can only be achieved once subject matter and narrative are out of the way. By seductively morphing the expressive and the minimal, her paintings are increasingly rich and psychologically compelling - while their vast surfaces and glowing light suggest something of the open spaces of New Mexico, where the artist lives.
Opaque yet translucent, unbounded and restrained, fluid and frozen, her work has been described by essayist and critic Arden Reed as being constructed out of dichotomies: “Surface/depth/, randomness/design, flesh/word, motion/stillness. Her paintings both enliven and compose us.”
A native of Belgium, Goethals received a B.F.A. from Atelier 75 in Brussels before moving to Los Angeles to continue her studies at the Otis Art Institute. After graduating with honors, she began exhibiting in L.A., moving quickly from a small, but exciting non-profit space (LACE) to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Drawn to the quality of light and the vastness of the landscape, she moved to New Mexico in 1993. Her paintings have been widely exhibited in the U.S. and abroad, and have been collected by distinguished public and private collections, including the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, the Boise Art Museum, and the New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts.
