Garland Fielder: Modulations

Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas is pleased to announce the opening of, Garland Fielder: Modulations, an exhibition of recent paintings and sculpture. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, October 16th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibit continues through December 18th.
Fielder’s work is meticulously crafted invoking a minimalist tradition. Keeping the palette to a minimum of elements and colors, his methodology is elegant and refined. His art explores mathematical and geometric principles and is primarily concerned with the optical decision making process. The extraction of line and the flattening out of structural elements are ways in which he plays with the phenomenology of formal expectation. The exhibition, Modulations, is inspired by this formal play between both two and three dimensionality.
The artist, when commenting on his work has said, “I continue to explore the relationship between anticipation and fulfillment. I have created installations that examine two- dimensional expectations and three-dimensional presentations. The viewer is challenged in surmising the orientation of the artwork, and thereby draws into question his/her own assumptions about reality at large. It is the act of interpretation that interests me and gives me hope.”
Born in Houston, Texas in 1971, Fielder currently resides in Austin where he is pursuing a Masters of Architecture at the University of Texas. Fielder’s education is as robust and diverse as his artwork. He received a BA in philosophy and creative writing from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and a MFA from the University of North Texas.
Most recently, Fielder was included in the New American Talent exhibition, a two-year traveling exhibition originating in Austin. For the second time, Fielder will be featured in the juried exhibition in print, New American Painting (West edition #80), published this fall. Other recent exhibitions include; an artist residency at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, China; The Focus and Azalea galleries in San Francisco, CA; The University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland; The Commerce Street Artist's Warehouse, Houston, TX; and Anya Tish Gallery, Houston, TX. His art criticism has appeared in various arts magazines such as Artforum.com, Art Lies, Glasstire, and Art Papers.
