PRESS RELEASE
Dornith Doherty: Exchange
Feb 21 – May 9, 2015
Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas is pleased to announce the opening of Exchange, an exhibition of recent photographs by Dornith Doherty. The exhibit continues through May 9. An opening reception will be held February 21, from 6 - 8 pm.
Traveling with the support of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, Doherty used on-site x-ray equipment to photograph rare and critically threatened plants at three key facilities across the Australian continent. In this new body of work (created in 2014), Doherty continues to explore the role of seed banks and their preservation efforts in the face of climate change and the extinction of natural species. From eucalyptus and kangaroo grass to waratah, the vibrant biodiversity of this remote continent is reflected in collages painstakingly made from individual x-rays of seeds and plants. The exhibition's title, Exchange, references the global trade among the network of scientists and seed banks that exchange research and relocate vulnerable living materials to ensure their survival.
Dornith Doherty received a B.A. from Rice University and a M.F.A. from Yale University. She is a 2012 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow and is also a recipient of grants from the Fulbright Foundation, the Japan Foundation, the United States Department of the Interior, and the Indiana Arts Commission. She currently is a Distinguished Research Professor at the University of North Texas.
