Joan Winter: COLOR+LIGHT
May 12 – Oct 3, 2020
Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas is pleased to announce the opening of Joan Winter: COLOR+LIGHT, the artists fourth solo show with the gallery. The exhibition continues through Saturday, October 3, 2020.
COLOR+LIGHT consists of new oil paintings on linen, prints, and a sculpture that explores the perception of color from a purely visual reference and investigates how color changes, depending on light conditions affected by the passage of time in a day, over the seasons, or in a fleeting few moments.
Winter has also been studying the history of color pigments and how different colors in different cultures have developed certain conceptual meanings – spiritual and/or emotional. She is interested in the Japanese perception of color, which is more tactile than we think of color in the west.
In COLOR+LIGHT she is hand mixing natural mineral pigments to make oil paint, an ancient process, which allows her to discover unique hues. She uses multiple translucent layers to express subtle gradations of color across the linen panels. Her interest has continued and been developed over the past decade, in images of waterfalls, cloud forms, and natural elements. She encourages the viewer to question “how we see”, challenging the tension between seeing and perception.
Joan Winter worked in architecture for ten years before receiving her MFA from SMU. She studied art and architecture at Texas Tech University. Her solo exhibitions from the mid 1990’s - 2018 include galleries in New York, Chicago, Santa Fe, Houston, Marfa, San Antonio, Austin and Dallas. Her work is in the Houston Museum of Fine Art, the Tyler Museum of Art and in numerous collections, both private and public, in the US and UK. She has also been included in exhibitions in Awaji, Japan and Arequipa, Peru. Winter’s work is included in book publications: Texas Abstract: Modern/Contemporary and Flatbed Press at 25 Years and recent catalogues, Joan Winter, Edge of Light and Joan Winter, Japan Prints.
