In Sequence: Paintings and Works on Paper
Aug 28 – Nov 13, 2021
Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas is pleased to announce the opening of In Sequence, an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by artists working in a serial format. An open house will be held on Saturday, August 28th, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. The exhibition continues through Saturday, November 13.
In Sequence showcases artists including Anna Bogatin Ott, Rebecca Carter, Eric Cruikshank, Geoff Hippenstiel, Dion Johnson, Lester Monzon, Jill Moser, Jackie Tileston, and Joan Winter. The selections reveal the artists wide range of creative approaches in conceiving and producing works in a series.
A series is, by definition, two or more unique and autonomous things possessing some commonality and organized sequentially. The principles can vary widely—from thematic to conceptual— or something else entirely. The sequence is essential to the way the group is read and understood, and may be dictated by the artist, by a system or logic, or may be open-ended and indeterminate.
Many artists have been making art this way for years—believing that the creative process is an open-ended serial pursuit with each creative act informed by the previous one. Creativity, in other words, is a serial process.
