Kim Cadmus Owens: Reading Between the Lines
Nov 21 – Dec 24, 2009

Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas, Texas is pleased to announce the opening of “Reading Between the Lines” on Saturday, November 21st from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The exhibition features recent paintings and works on paper from Dallas artist Kim Cadmus Owens and continues through Thursday, December 24, 2009.

Kim Cadmus Owens’ work examines the effects of digital technology on our environment and how space is perceived and used. Whereas most see interruptions of this technology as an inconvenience, Owens sees it as an opportunity to explore the complex and hyper-visual nature of this new techno-mediated reality. Using a computer to convert and process imagery, the artist turns the visual evidence of the digital into a formal language, exposing the image’s encoding to reveal its inherent abstractions.

“Reading Between the Lines” investigates urban landscape as historical record and vernacular architecture as anthropology. The artist is inspired by nostalgic imagery reflecting decades of redevelopment -- a mid-century bank, a roadside motel, deco- era signage and a city block’s façade. Through shifts in color palette, perspective and composition Owens un-tethers this imagery of structures and signs from the past and creates new meaning and significance that speaks to the future.

Kim Cadmus Owens recently participated in the group exhibition Femme Fatale at Holly Johnson Gallery. She also participated in Build Me Up, Tear Me Down at Platform Project Space at Denise Bibro in New York City, the Texas Biennial 2009 in Austin, Texas, and was recently featured in New American Paintings #78. Owens was recently selected to create a public art project for the DART Rail System. She will design and create translucent wind screens reminiscent of her paintings for the Las Colinas Urban Center station scheduled to open in 2011. The Las Colinas Urban Center Station will be part of the Orange Line, connecting to DFW airport in 2013.

Owens attended the University of North Texas before receiving her B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the San Francisco Art Institute and her M.F.A. in Painting from Towson University near Baltimore, Maryland. Owens was born and raised in Texas, and has lived in New York, Baltimore, and San Francisco. She currently resides in Dallas and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Dallas.
